Inequality in PhD Programs
Created as a personal project
A series of charts that I made exploring the demographics of PhD programs in the United States, with a particular focus on inequality based on gender and ethnicity. The data comes from the NSF, and shows how PhD demographics have changed over time, including that the gender gap overall is closing, but remains strong in certain fields. It also shows a distinct lack of ethnic diversity among PhD programs, particularly in STEM fields. Perhaps most troubling, is that minority students appear to receive less funding and graduate with more debt than their white male counterparts. Explore the charts below.
